Each acupuncture session may include the following modalities, depending on the patient’s individual needs:

  • Cupping is an ancient method of removing and moving stagnation of qi, blood and body fluids that have built up over time in the muscles and surrounding tissues.  This is done by creating a suction with glass or plastic cups in the desired area.  The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system. Cupping is also used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.

  • Moxibustion (moxa) comes from the Mugwort plant.  Its leaves are dried and refined to be used for treatment.  Moxa is placed on or above the desired acu-point and lit on fire to create heat and generate the yang qi of the body.  There are many benefits to Moxibustion Therapy.   Clinically it increases blood cell counts, especially that of white blood cells which strengthens the immune system.  The heat produced from the burning moxa penetrates deeply into underlying tissues improving circulation and helping to reduce both pain and inflammation.  Moxibustion can be used to strengthen our energy system and has been successful at turning babies in the breech position.

  • Electrostimulation or “E-stim” provides a low level of electrical stimulation to acupuncture points to stimulate blood flow throughout the body. E-stim can be used for musculo-skeletal pain, providing relief by opening the meridian and letting the qi flow freely, restoring balance.  It is also effective in increasing blood flow to the ovaries, to enhance fertility, and breaking up stagnation in the form of ovarian cysts or fibroids.

  • Herbal Medicine is a wonderful addition to any acupuncture treatment.  Herbal treatments are integral to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and have been for nearly 5000 years.  Each herbal formula is given to fit a pattern of disharmony that a patient may be presenting at the time of their visit.  Before each formula can be administered, a comprehensive exam must be done to evaluate the type of herbs to be given. Chinese medicine has the ability to treat the root source of a patient's complaint, treating the mind, body and it's presenting disharmonies as a whole.   As a result, the patient may begin to notice not only are they healing from their initial complaint, but may also notice other bodily functions are beginning to take a much healthier form and function.
